Officials release name of suspect killed by APD SWAT officers in Hereford

Officials have released the name of a suspect shot and killed by Amarillo SWAT officers in Hereford on Wednesday.

Officers were attempting to apprehend 35 year old Jonathan Joey Mendoza on his warrants for Parole Violation – Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon, Assault Household Member – Impeding Breath or Circulation, Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon, and Terroristic Threat.

During the investigation, Mendoza was located at a residence in the 200 block of 6th Avenue in Hereford. The APD SWAT team worked with DPS and Deaf Smith County and attempted to take Mendoza into custody on the warrants.

Mendoza exited the rear of a  residence with a handgun. When he saw the officers in the back, the Mendoza ran around towards the front of the residence and pointed the handgun at officers.

APD SWAT officers shot Mendoza. He died on scene.

As per APD protocol, the involved officers will be placed on a mandatory paid administrative leave.

The Texas Rangers continue their investigation into the shooting and all investigative findings will be turned over to the District Attorney’s office for review.
