Texas governor Greg Abbott wins reelection

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) won reelection on Tuesday, defeating Democratic challenger Lupe Valdez.

Abbott, 60, cruised to a second term with a victory over Valdez, who previously served as the Dallas County sheriff. Abbott held a sizable lead in most polls throughout the race in a state that has not elected a Democratic governor since 1990.

As a result, Abbott spent much of the campaign stumping for more imperiled GOP candidates throughout the state.

Abbott has been a staunch supporter of President Trump, who won Texas by 9 percentage points in the 2016 election.

Prior to running for governor, Abbott served as the state’s attorney general from 2002-2015.
