City of Canyon names new Finance Director

Joel Wright was confirmed as the next City of Canyon Finance Director by the Canyon City Commission on Monday, January 6. Wright, a Canyon resident and West Texas
A&M graduate, is a Certified Public Account and has over 27 years of accounting experience in the Amarillo area. He will begin his duties on February 6.

“I have lived in Canyon for over 30 years, raising my family here, and serving in my church here. I am excited about the growth of our community, and I look forward to this opportunity to apply my professional experience and skills to serving Canyon,” Wright said.

As the Finance Director Wright will be responsible for managing all aspects of Canyon’s finances, procurement and purchasing. Over the past 6 years, Mr. Wright has been assisting the City of Canyon prepare for their annual audit, bringing a thorough knowledge of the City’s budgeting and financial practices, along with knowing the City’s current financial situation.

“Over 27 years of experience in public accounting, 25 of which involved serving primarily governmental clients, has allowed me to develop a broad knowledge of accounting systems and governmental accounting standards,” Wright stated.

“The Finance Director is a vital position for the City of Canyon in efficiently handling our $20 million budget. The expertise that Joel brings to this position as a CPA working in governmental
audits will take Canyon to a new level in reporting to the City Commission and citizens of Canyon. That in itself should help us be more efficient in running city government” Gary Hinders, Mayor of Canyon said. Hinders stated that “Joel knows the city and he will be a great fit as part of our city team”.

Wright is replacing former Finance Director Chris Sharp. Sharp, who was the Canyon Director of Finance and Assistant City Manager for 11 years, accepted the position of Vice President for Business Affairs at Amarillo College.
